Set in the backdrop of 1990 Calcutta, She is a story about finding one’s own identity in spite of all odds. The story spins around the life of Kusum, a brave heart whose identity is often untitled and blurred; it does not belong anywhere, definitely not under the ‘he’ or ‘she’ bracket, thanks to our social conditioning. Will she be successful in her mission? Find out in She, an utterly absorbing read that derives inspiration from Tagore’s “Ekla Cholo Re” song, which urges everyone to move on despite the fear of abandonment from others.

My Views:

I received this book today for review and I finished reading it in less than ten minutes; not only because it is only 58 pages but, also because it is impressive. I still remember a novel of which I could not read even 40 pages and it was listed as bestseller. I had not heard about this book before the author approached me. This is a simple, well-written book about the life of a transsexual. The language is good and flawless. The cover is simple, with inverted 'S' that signifies the gender issue of the main character in the book.
The psychology and poetical references in the book add weight to the simple story.
I personally believe that this plot can be extended beyond 50 plus pages (readers would love to know more about Kusum); having said that - I must also admit that the plot is powerful even in the given limit.
The beginning of the book, however, seems to be forced but once the story progresses, the flow becomes easy and you cannot put down the book without finishing it. There is a surprise element towards the end but it seems abrupt at the same time.

Overall, it is a brilliant effort to putforth an important message.
